In the course of their study, students have practical training within the course Fieldwork practice where they acquire specific practical competences during their stay at worksites under the guidance of mentors which are licensed occupational therapists.

After Fieldwork practice I the students will be able to:

  • explain their role in the therapeutic process (to the client/patient, team members);
  • conduct an occupational therapy interview (COPM);
  • explain the reasons and factors which influenced the selection of specific occupational therapy assessment;
  • apply and interpret the results of occupational therapy self-assessment (Occupational questionnaire, Occupational self-assessment, Check lists for marking interests and roles);
  • assess the client’s social environment and the social environment resources;
  • apply and interpret the results of standardized and non-standardized occupational therapy assessment in the professional manner;
  • comply with ethical principles and standards of practice;
  • organize and conduct a structured occupational therapy observation of activities (analysis of activity/occupations) and interpret the results;
  • communicate the results of occupational therapy assessment to a client and team members;
  • define short-term and long-term intervention goals;
  • select and apply the appropriate occupational therapy model and approach within the occupational therapy assessment;
  • keep occupational therapy documentation and write an occupational therapy report.

In the course of Fieldwork practice II students apply the competences acquired during Fieldwork practice I and they are additionally trained to:

  • organize and select the results of occupational therapy assessments which allow intervention planning;
  • interpret the assessment results in order to highlight strengths and weaknesses of the client;
  • identify priorities and agree on realistic goals with the client, family or team members, taking into account the constraints and expectations of the client;
  • define reasonable and achievable short-term and long-term goals of intervention;
  • choose the approaches and methods of intervention in order to achieve the defined  goals;
  • identify and explain the purpose of the chosen method of occupational therapy intervention;
  • prepare yourself, the client, spatial conditions and aids for the implementation of occupational therapy intervention;
  • apply occupational therapy techniques on the principle of client-centered approach;
  • conduct interval estimation during the occupational therapy interventions in order to control the progress of the intervention, and adjust the intervention to new needs and abilities of the client;
  • record the outcome of the intervention.

In the course of Fieldwork practice III students apply all the competences acquired during Fieldwork practice II and they are additionally trained to:

  • apply the newly adopted occupational therapy techniques on the principle of client-centered approach;
  • evaluate the media and techniques used during the intervention;
  • review the results of the interval and the final assessment and use them to adapt the intervention;
  • critically evaluate the entire implemented occupational therapy process, their own role and contribution, and the services provided to the client;
  • propose adjustments of the implemented occupational therapy interventions and new interventions.

Heads of Fieldwork practice at each worksite are responsible for the students’ adoption of competences. Upon completion of the course Fieldwork practice in a particular year of study, students, under the supervision of the Head of Fieldwork practice at each site, write occupational therapy report about the client they worked with, and thus unify and enhance the acquired competences, in accordance with the adopted skills in each year of study. The written report is submitted to the mentor as evidence of the acquired competences. Mentors and students follow ethical guidelines in writing the report, and in particular the confidentiality of the data used.
